I am here to tell you to forget your New Year's Resolutions. What are your New Year's Intentions?
Forget your New Year's Resolutions. Think about it, how many times have you resolved to do something in January (Lose 20 pounds! Quit sugar! Exercise every day!) and then you mess up. Resolutions can be vague and too broad. Now the resolution is over because you failed once and decided redemption was not an option. According to US News & World Report, 80 percent of all New Year’s resolutions fail by the second month of the year.
A resolution ties you to the future with no clear path forward while an intention grounds you in the present. Intention is something we aim to do. It supports grace and forgiveness and time. Set intentions, get specific, set yourself up for success and take small, actionable steps daily. Small, simple commitments lead to lifelong healthy habits. A commitment to consistency is key.
It is beautiful to set goals and intentions. To dream wide awake. It is also important to remain present in the moment.
My word of the year for 2022 was SURRENDER. When we surrender we accept what life gives us. We let go of the ego and let go of how things SHOULD BE. Surrender can push you to your limits but can also be the catalyst for profound change. While some may resist change (trust me, I have been there) it can also be an incredible opportunity. One definition of intelligence is the ability to adapt to change and I believe the first step in adapting to change is to surrender.
My word for 2023 is COLLABORATION. Entrepreneurship can be difficult and lonely. I am making space for powerful collaborations this year. We are better, together. Growing together, supporting each other. None of us got here on our own.
